From the Principal

Dear Helensvale State High School Community

There is no doubt that we all want our children to be safe and well, whether that be at school, on the weekend, during holidays or when they are on their electronic devices.

Have you ever wondered?

  • If my child is saying they are being bullied, how would I respond?
  • What if my child is the bully?
  • How may my child’s digital footprint impact on their future?
  • Am I really sure my child is safe on line?
  • What do other parents / carers do when it comes to navigating such topics?

Come along to our next Cyber-safety and Anti-bullying forum and listen to what the experts have to say. You may be surprised or learn something new. I do know you will find value in the forum, as did this Year 8 parent.

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to Helensvale High and the Department of Education staff who hosted last night’s parent forum for Cyber-safety and Anti-Bullying. As a parent I am very grateful for the opportunity to access specialists in these areas in a personal setting. It reinforced in my mind that keeping our children safe on the internet really is a joint effort between schools and families. I learnt some useful information and tips that I will be taking on board. Thanks to the staff who helped to organise this event, and to those who gave up their time outside of work to make this happen.”

World’s Greatest Shave 2019

This week the school held their World’s Greatest Shave event to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Many brave students from years 7 – 12 showed their support by shaving and colouring their hair. With the help of the lovely Ms Turgeon and two amazing barbers from Misty’s Barbers in Oxenford, 12 courageous students shaved their hair to raise money to donate to support families dealing with the horrible impacts of blood cancer. Overall, the event was a great success, and the students raised just under $3000 for the cause.

A great big heartfelt thank you to everyone involved.

Athletics Carnival

What a fantastic 2 day carnival it was with amazing weather and a very high standard of competition on display. Students leaped and ran their way into the record books with some very talented athletes showing their skills to the entire school and providing some great entertainment. As with all major events it could not have occurred without the massive contribution from all staff and support from all teams around this massive school. Team spirit was on display with most students coming in with some amazing and wonderful costumes and it was easy to see which students were supporting their teams. At the end of the 2 days Shelley house took out the competition points and are looking good to take out the house champions trophy for 2019 with some final points being tallied. Age Champions will be congratulated on parades in the coming weeks and students will be congratulated on stage for their great efforts. Thank you to Tracey and the little athletics team for coming down on both days and helping with all timing and also being on hand for some great advice.

Sport Academy – 2019 So Far

The Helensvale Sport Academy has already seen much success this year. Our coaches have been working hard to deliver high quality and current training programs for our young student athletes and this is clearly paying off. Thank you to all our coaches for the time they have given outside of school hours and the hard work they put in to get our students out competing and representing our school.

Netball

The senior indoor netball team have taken out the Gold Coast section and qualified for the state finals in July. Our junior indoor team has also finished runners up in this section and will also compete in the state finals. Well done girls!!

Congratulations to the following girls on the recent representative selections.

Aaliya Jones has been selected to the South Coast U19 team to contest the state championships later this year. Congratulations and good luck!

Reilley Batcheldor has been selected in the QLD U17 and Australian U17 team, which is a remarkable achievement. On the back of this Reilley has now been added to the QLD fusion squad which is the direct feeder team for the QLD Firebirds. Congratulations Reilley!

Good luck to both our junior and senior netball teams as they prepare to compete in the state wide Vicki Wilson Cup. We look forward to seeing both these teams progress through to the finals.

Football

The Football academy has again performed extremely well across both futsal and football competitions so for this year.

Our 13 and 14 years boys teams have been recently crowned the Gold Coast Champions and our 15 years boys and 14 years girls teams have taken out the South East QLD championships. Congratulations to all involved. We will have 7 teams contest the state futsal titles this year which is our best ever result in this competition. Congratulations and good luck to all involved.

In the football arena, our students have also seen early success with the 15 years boys named the Northern Gold Coast champions in the Bill Turner Cup and will progress through to the state wide play offs. The Senior boys and girls teams have also topped their pool and will progress through to the state playoffs in the ISC Cup and Trophy. A fantastic achievement by all involved.

Congratulations to the following students on their recent representative selections.

Noah Davis and Lilly Rae have both been selected to the QLD Football teams. Well done Noah and Lilly!!

Rugby Union

The rugby union academy has continued to work hard on general attack skills and defensive roles throughout the term. After the success of winning the inaugural Gold Coast Schools Cup the students will now turn their attention to 7s Rugby with the goal of defending our SEQ U15 championship. We have had former Wallaby and Australian Sevens player Richard Kingi in for some specialist sessions which is a fantastic opportunity for our boys.

Congratulations to the following current and former Rugby students on their selection in South Coast and Gold Coast Cyclones teams.

Jordan Kopae – South Coast and Cyclones, Justyce Werahiko – South Coast, Xavier McEldowney – South Coast and Cyclones, Nicko Kaaka – Cyclones, Tyler Maxwell – Cyclones, Stacey Kopua - Cyclones

Tommy Back – South Coast and Cyclones, Ethan Heley – Cyclones, Kase Milham – Cyclones.

Volleyball

Congratulations to Olivia Manu and Ethan Hill who have represented South Coast U19s at the recent state championships. Olivia came away with a silver medal after a fantastic team performance and Ethan was selected in the QLD squad to prepare for an upcoming tour to Thailand. Congratulations!!

Holiday Programs

What is resilience?

Resiliency skills help young people to effectively deal with adversity and change and are vital to their wellbeing.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. It is a necessary skill for coping with life’s inevitable obstacles and one of the key ingredients to success. When we apply resilience through the positive psychology lens, the learning is not only to bounce back, but to bounce forward. Examples of challenges some young people may face where resiliency skills are essential:

  • physical illness
  • change of school
  • transitioning from primary school to high school
  • change in family make up (divorce, break up)
  • change of friendship group
  • conflict with peers
  • conflict with family
  • managing study workload.

Earn and Learn

Dear Parents/Caregivers – The school is collecting Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers again this year. Thank you for your support last year which enabled us to choose sporting equipment that all students have access to. The SEP Unit was also given equipment which is vital to enhancing student movement. Please take stickers to the front office or to Sharon Skennar in the HPE Office near the SAC.
