From the Principal

Dear Helensvale State High School Community

Respecting our Environment

Well designed and maintained school grounds can support teaching and learning. School grounds can influence positive behaviours and reinforce our learning values. Over the past few years there have been many enhancements within the school grounds. As you walk through the grounds of Helensvale State High School you will see plenty of seating for our students. You will notice the pride we have in our green spaces, many of which have been planted out and cared for by our students. You will see visual representations of our learning values of respect, responsibility and resilience, including signage, displays of student work and references to our environmental ambassador, Bruce the Bandicoot.

This year, in partnership with our P & C association, we submitted a School Subsidy Scheme application. This submission was for 3 outdoor learning areas, one as an extension to SWeLL, one near the basketball courts and one at Discovery. The total cost of this project is valued at $365 000. With this scheme, the school funds 50% and the Department of Education funds the other 50%. Helensvale SHS has been approved for the maximum subsidy of $182 500 towards the outdoor learning areas so we get all 3 outdoor learning areas!!

Thank you to our business manager, Mr Forsyth, our facilities manager, Mrs Dwyer and the P & C Association for their hours and hours of work in preparing the submission. Thank you also to our P & C for allocating the $182 500 to this project. We are very fortunate to have this funding to continue ensuring our grounds provide an environment conducive to learning.

The next P & C meeting will be on Wednesday 25 November, from 6pm to 7pm. In response to COVID-19 precautions we have continued to have P & C meetings via zoom.

On behalf of the staff at Helensvale State High School I wish you all a safe, restful and happy holiday. A reminder that Monday 5th October is a public holiday, therefore school will resume on Tuesday 6th October.

Take care.

Cubby Houses Donated To Young Discoverers Childcare Centre

It was with great pleasure that Helensvale State High School has donated 2 cubby houses to the Young Discoverers Childcare Centre. The cubby houses were proudly built by the Year 12 Building and Construction class last year and it is wonderful to see them being used by the young children in our local community.

A special ‘thank you’ was organised by Chrissy Jones, the Director of the Young Discoverers Childcare Centre for the children to present a certificate to Deputy Principal, Janelle Dickman in appreciation for this kind donation from Helensvale State High School. Local Gold Coast Councillor, William Owen-Jones was also invited to attend the official opening of the cubby houses in the childcare centre’s outdoor play area. The children were having such fun with these cubbies and their joy and excitement was heart-warming.

Helensvale State High School students have built these cubbies and learnt many construction skills in the process and now have successfully contributed to enriching the young lives of children and can see the benefit of their hard work. A great community venture for the Design Department. Well done to Mr. Zane Woods (Building and Construction Teacher) and the Year 12 students.
