From the Principal
Dear Helensvale State High School Community
If you have been monitoring our school Facebook page recently, you would have read about the amazing achievements of our students across the Arts, Sport and Academia. These students have one trait in common – they have courage.
As you are aware, our theme for the year is Be Courageous, which has tied into the launch of our school mascot, the hawk very nicely. During assemblies the Deans have been unpacking with the students what being courageous actually means and looks like in our daily lives. I would like to share our messages to our students with you and encourage you to talk to your children about the notion of courage.
Being a Courageous Learner could look like
- Speaking up and acting when something doesn’t feel or seem right
- Standing up to peers when they are mistreating others
- Trying new things and persisting when you are not immediately successful
- Not following the crowd or succumbing to peer pressure
- Being a role model who encourages others
- Having unique interests, independent thoughts, and being yourself
Showing Moral Courage could look like
- Standing up for what is right when a person or group of people are being treated unfairly
- Expressing a personal value or belief appropriately
- Letting go of what you can’t change and accepting the consequences of your choices
Moral Courage supports a growth mindset by encouraging
- An understanding of community values and standing up for what is right
- Your inner strength to be an upstander, not a bystander
- Citizenship and community well-being
- Improved self-esteem and self-respect
- Your ability to have a voice and being true to yourself
Intellectual Courage is the ability to recognize our individual limits in thinking and be open to new ideas and understandings based on new experiences and learning.
Empathetic Courage is the courage to put aside our own assumptions and stereotypes and listen to another’s perspective. This opens us up to feel deeply for others and to learn from their experiences.

Craig Tuffin Workshop
On Thursday 13th May, the Year 11 Certificate III in Visual Arts students had the privilege of attending a workshop hosted by renowned photographic artist, Craig Tuffin. The students were given a chronological insight into the development of the photographic world and watched Craig create and develop a photographic plate using a large format camera that he built himself.

Studio Lighting Workshop
On Tuesday 27th April, the Year 12 Certificate II in Visual Arts students participated in a Studio Lighting workshop with professional photographer Jason Buck from Buckshots. This year, they were fortunate to have the Senior Dance Students pose as models, using four different backdrops and lighting. It was a successful endeavour for both classes.

Stationery Drive!
This year, our year 10 Northern Collegiate group is working with The Smith Family to collect stationery for students who are less advantaged. The Smith Family is a national children's charity helping Australian children to get the most out of their education, in order to create better futures. At Helensvale SHS we have organised a stationery drive to get our school involved with helping others.
Some stationery that The Smith Family are looking for are: Highlighters, pens, pencils, note pads, books, calculators, foolscap Manilla folders, white out and erasers.
We have 2 drop off boxes, one in the SWELL and the other located in the Discovery Place staffroom.
This is a great opportunity for us to help others.
If there are any questions please email: Keely - kkabl2@eq.edu.au or Ella eflow8@eq.edu.au
Entrepreneurial Studies
The year 7 and 8 Entrepreneurial Studies classes have been working using a website called ‘Tinkercad’ to design their very first 3D printing project of a whistle. From the pics it can be seen that the school 3D printers are busy printing them for the classes to take home. For a first attempt at designing, using a PDF document as a step by step guide, I am really impressed with how innovative, resilient and hardworking they have been.
