From the Principal
Dear Helensvale State High School Community
Whilst the school’s infrastructure was not affected directly by the floods, I acknowledge the many members of our local and broader community who have been, and continue to be, affected by the recent extreme weather event. It is times like these that we rely on each other as ‘One Community’ and offer support as best we can.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as this extreme weather event unfolded and presented further challenges to what is best described as an unusually distruptive start to the 2022 school year.
Thank you for your continued understanding, patience and responsiveness as we manage whatever critical incident comes our way.
As we experience time and time again, it’s not just in times of crisis that our school staff put their best foot forward to support their school community. With a very challenging start to the school year hopefully behind us, our focus is clear, that is, to ensure each and every student is succeeding. Students now need to demonstrate our learning values of responsibility and resilience, engaging with school routines, curriculum and assessment.
Whilst we forge ahead with our most central function that is student learning, our highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of every student. We have a very large support team at Helensvale State High School to support your child with their learning and well-being. Hopefully you are familiar with the many faces below.

Rising Hockey Star
Quintyn Laskey- Vella, a year 11 student, has recently been named in the Australian Indoor Hockey Junior Men’s Emerging Squad 2022! Quintyn was one of the youngest Goal keepers, in field hockey, in the Australian National Championships, representing Queensland last year at just 15. This coming April he will represent QLD again, in Cairns for the Nationals for in team 1!
His achievements have not come without hard work and dedication. Quintyn has always excelled in his hockey skills. Starting as a field player he began his representative positions in field for GC at aged 9, he continued for a couple of years, before deciding to switch to play in the goals. He’s played in divisions well above his age, up into U15 and U17 from 10 years of age. While loving both positions he found his passion in the goals, and has excelled dramatically. He’s had incredible opportunities to be able to train alongside current and past Olympians since he was 12. He made his first Queensland National under 13s and has continued to improve from there.
His training and game schedule have always consisted of junior hockey teams, as well as senior trainings, as well as representative training. He usually attends at least 4 training sessions a week, and 2 games until 2 years ago when it increased again to 1 junior team on the field as a field player, 2 senior teams as a field and goal keeper, as well as with the rep training sessions for school sports teams & GC teams.
Quintyn and his family have another big year ahead of training and playing. Good luck Quintyn!
Athletics
Congratulations to Koby Pocock, a year 10 student, who competed at the QLD Athletic State Championships on the weekend. He placed 2nd in Hammer with a new PB and will represent QLD at National Championships next month. Well done Koby!
AFLW
Congratulations to Kialla-Skye Bailey who flew to Melbourne yesterday with the U18 Gold Coast Suns. They took on the NAB Oakleigh Chargers and came home with a big win. Kialla played across half back and performed well, keeping the opposition to a low score. The team was also coached by our Helensvale Academy coach Miss Priest.

Acknowledgment of Country
Helensvale State High School as one community, acknowledges the Kombumerri Peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our school is built. We respect their long history, ancestry and culture. We pay our respects to the Elders, past, present and emerging for they carry the memories and traditions of past times.
We would also like to extend our acknowledgment to other First Nations Peoples: those hailing from the Torres Strait Islands and those belonging to other Aboriginal Language Groups.
We acknowledge the strength and resilience of Kombumerri peoples. We respect their enduring connection to the local wetlands and the cultural responsibility they uphold to preserve wildlife. Together, we go forward, learning in the spirit of these values.
