From the Principal
Dear Helensvale State High School Community
Fostering and maintaining positive staff-student relationships is central to student engagement and wellbeing, having a profound effect on academic success. Positive relationships promote a supportive school environment in which staff and students thrive.
You would have seen the recent Facebook posts from the Staff Recognition Day where students greeted staff with smiling faces as staff entered the school grounds. Throughout the year, staff write positive postcards to students that are posted home. Students also engage in writing positive messages to the staff. I have included in this article some of the messages that students wrote to various staff members.
Positive relationships between staff and students is not about being best friends. Far from it. Fostering positive teacher-student relationships is about mutual respect, being clear with behavioural expectations, believing that all students can achieve and being fair and consistent.
Whilst we are sad to see our Year 12s leave, it is also such a happy, nostalgic time for our Year 12s, as they come to realise just how important the staff are in their lives. It is a time where I observe the positive relationships that have been forged between staff and students, many over an extended period of time.
I would like to congratulate our Year 12 students for demonstrating the passion, commitment, grit and resilience necessary to succeed in whatever pathway they may choose. We are proud of who they have become and what they have achieved. May there be many more successes and achievements in the years to come. We wish you all the best.
Kind Regards
Karen Lindsay

HELENSVALE STATE HIGH SCHOOL STANDOUT SPORTING STUDENTS
Billy Dowling - GOLF
Billy Dowling is a phenomenal young golfer with an impressive list of achievements already sitting next to his name. Currently playing off a handicap of +5, his notable achievements include playing in two professional tournaments at the QLD Open in 2021 and the QLD PGA in 2022. He is a current QLD State Junior Team member and winner of the QLD Junior Order of Merit in 2021. This year, he has won the South Australian Junior Amateur tournament, came fourth at the Australian Junior Amateur, 11th at the Australian Amateur (open) giving him a ranking of 3rd on the Australian Junior Order of Merit. He also played at the IMG Junior World Championships at the Torrey Pines Course in San Diego, finishing in 11th place. For his hard work and outstanding results, he received a scholarship from pro golfer Cam Smith who flew Billy out to Florida to show him around his house and take him to a professional tournament. He surely is one to watch with a bright future ahead!
Ngahuia Te Rure - NETBALL
Ngahuia Te Rure is one of the most promising prospects at Helensvale State High School since Reilley Batcheldor. She is a strong and highly accurate shooter, who can shoot with range and volume. Ngahuia dominated the secondary school indoor competition single-handedly this year. She was an instrumental member of the Helensvale State High School Senior Vicki Wilson Cup Side.
Ngahuia has been selected into the Queensland 17 Squad for her second year, and will be pushing for final selections to attend the National Championships in Darwin in 2023.
She is a member of the Brisbane Wildcats Region, where she is a member of their Ruby side, and also a member of their 16s State Titles team. Ngahuia has been selected for consecutive years to represent the South Coast Region, which has also led to her being selected for Queensland Schoolgirls representation.
Deja Waitere Patterson - NETBALL
Deja is a tall, rangy, unassuming circle defender. Deja has had a break out year, being selected for the Bond University Bullsharks 16s State Titles side. Deja also had an impressive season at school level, being named as player of the Grand Final at the secondary school Indoor Tournament, and being a member of our Senior Vicki Wilson Side. Deja represents the Northern Gold Coast region in the 15 years age group.
Deja has the ability to influence the outcome of matches through her tenacity, anticipation and aerial ability. She has an enormous potential in the sport and is a future star on the rise.
Grace Cooper – AFL & TRACK & FIELD
Grace Cooper is one of Helensvale State High School’s, and the Gold Coast’s, up and coming athletes. She is a year 7 student that has come into the school’s AFL program. Grace has been named as one of the top 3 players in almost all of our AFL Schools’ Cup games. She is a natural athlete with a big engine and hunger to win. She can be played in any position on the field and dominate her opponent. Grace Cooper was named as the Gold Coast Suns U13 Girls Rising Star. She is very new to the game but is already a stand out and has coaches recognising her talent.
Grace Is also a Track and Field athlete. You will find her training most days either at the track or in the gym, constantly trying to improve herself. She has recently competed at the QLD Track and Field School Championships, where she placed 2nd in Hammer Throw, qualifying for the National Championships in Adelaide. She also placed 4th in 400m and 6th in Discus.
Grace Cooper is a name to remember. You will most likely be watching her in the AFLW in the future or see her competing at the Olympics.
Max Masters - AFL
Max is an inside strong midfielder with exceptionally clean hands and excellent decision-making skills. He leads from the front and gives confidence to teammates around him. Max puts team performance in front of individual achievements at all times. He leads by example, is humble and displays resilience.
Max is Co-Captain of the Queensland Under 17s and trained with the Under 18 Allies squad as an under ager. He has also been playing senior footy with Broadbeach in the QAFL this year.
Josh Zanker-Close -AFL
Josh Zanker-Close- Josh or J.Z. as he is also known, is one of those “one in a million” players with great speed, strength, height and an ability to read the game 3 plays before it happens. J.Z has been a massive contributor to the Helensvale State High School side this year and his ability to intercept mark across Half Back makes it very hard for opposing teams to get past. Josh leads by example, demonstrates humility and resilience. It’s these qualities that made him the Best Player of the Finals for the Helensvale SHS State Championships series.
He is a Gold Coast Suns Academy player and trained with the Under 18 Allies squad as an under ager. Josh has also been playing senior footy with Broadbeach in the QAFL this year. Unfortunately, injury kept Josh out of the State Side this year.
Zak Boyd – FOOTBALL & FUTSAL
Zak lives and breathes football. What he may lack in height, he makes up in grit, determination and skill. As a versatile player who can slot into positions all around the pitch, he has had a brilliant year. In 2022, he has played for the Brisbane Roar FC 13’s side and Crusaders FC 13’s & 14’s sides. He is the Helensvale SHS Junior Boys Football Captain and earned representative selection for South Coast School Sport in the 14 Boys Futsal side.
Zara Boyd – FOOTBALL & FUTSAL
Zara is a force to be reckoned with on the football pitch. With a take no prisoners attitude, Zara excels in setting the example for others with her strong skill set and mindset. This year, she has played for the Gold Coast United FC 16 Girls side and played for Crusaders Womens F-League. She is the current Helensvale SHS Junior Girls Football Captain and has earned South Coast School Sport 13-15yr Girls representation in Football.
Samuel Gould – AWD SWIMMING, TRACK & FIELD & CROSS COUNTRY
Samuel is one to keep tabs on over the coming years. This year, he represented South Coast for Cross Country and at the QLD School Sport Track and Field competition, he won 6 medals. These include gold in the 800m, 4 x 100m relay and 1500m, silver in the 100m and 200m and bronze in long jump. Despite these impressive achievements, it is swimming where Samuel really shines. At the National School Swimming Championships, he won 7 gold medals: the 200m individual medley, 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and the 4 x 50m medley relay. He also won silver in the mixed 4x50m relay 50m breaststroke, as well as a bronze in the 50m butterfly. The Olympics are calling for Samuel and we look forward to seeing him excel.
Schools Premier League Runners Up for 2022
The Helensvale Football Academy’s Junior Boys have had an outstanding season in the Schools Premier League competition in 2022. Their consistency across the season earned them the right to contest the Grand Final today against Kelvin Grove SC on an immaculate Rochedale Rovers FC pitch. Despite preparing well during the week and working hard for each other throughout the match, the boys unfortunately went down 3-1. Thanks to our parents and guardians for their support throughout the season – hopefully the boys can go one better in 2023!
Congratulations on a great season boys!
